This High School assembly focused on two Jamaicans who made great choices: Nurse Mary Jane Secole from the 19th Century and today's Jovani Williams, 5th former and star violinist. Nurse Secole shared her journey past racial and gender discrimination to the Crimean War front, where she pioneered care for the wounded from every side of conflict. Jovani, son of Jamaican musician John Williams, told students of his path of self-discipline and choices which led him to win JCDC and begin his professional career. He also played, to the delight of the students. The assembly also honored the new cohort of students from Grades 12 and 10 who completed training and chose to serve s Peer Counselors. Deputy Head Boy Alex Brewster spoke on their behalf. Congratulations, new Peer Counselors!!!

John Williams honored the school by playing the National Anthem at the close of the assembly.

The High School students organized a rousing musical, dance and poetry demonstration of their respect and affection for their teachers in honor of Teachers' Day. The school band, the Hillel Ensemble and the Hillel Dancers were impressive. Well done, students, with a special thanks to Jamaican guest artists Jovani Williams and Rovleta Frazer, whose performances were breath-taking!

The Jamaican Mathematical Olympiad (JMO) seeks to identify the top students in each grade level (7th to 11th). The competition commenced on Monday, February 27 with 9 students from Hillel Academy submitting an entry. Five students (Leah Taylor, Arielle Silvera, Sabria Hector, Jonathon Lewis and Anubhav Pattanaik) advanced to the semi-final round of the competition which was held on Saturday, April 14, 2012 at the University of the West Indies. Two of these students are now through to the final round. They are Anubhav Pattanaik, Grade 9 Arielle Silvera, Grade 10.

By advancing to the Final Round, they have established themselves among the top 30 students nationally at their grade level and now have a chance to become a National Mathematical Champion for their grade for this year. The Final Round consists of two events. The first is a mathematics workshop to be conducted by the Department of Mathematics. This will be held on Saturday, April 28, 2012, from 10 am to 3 pm at the UWI, Mona Campus. The second event is the Final Round examination. This will be held on Saturday, May 5, 2012, at the UWI, Mona Campus.

On April 26, Hillel Academy was honored to host a visit from Dr. William 'Bill' Scotti of the Department of State, United States of America. He was accompanied by Mr. Alex Martschenko and Mr. Les DeGraffenreid of the Embassy of the United States of America in Jamaica. The group visited computer labs and classrooms and examined recent developments at Hillel, including the newly acquired property. Dr. Scotti congratulated Hillel on the excellent university places offered to Hillel students this year. Director Peggy Bleyberg was delighted to have the group visit Hillel and thanked Dr. Scotti for the continuing encouragement to Hillel and schools all over the world by the Office of Overseas Schools.

After three days of intense competition, Sinai with superior organization was able fight off the challenges from their rivals, to win the lower school division. The upper school tournament was more keenly contested, as it took goal difference to separate the winners Sinai and the pre- tournament favorite Masada. Congratulations to all who participated and supported their Teams.
