Prep School Academic Profile
The Academic Program
Hillel Academy Prep School offers a strong academic programme within an international context, both through the delivery of the curriculum and through exposure to students from all over the world. The School prides itself on having extensive sporting facilities, offering a large variety of sporting and non-sporting extra-curricular activities.
Students enter the Prep School in Kindergarten 1. Class sizes are small with a maximum of twenty five students per class. All teachers exceed required qualifications in Education, and all Class Teachers have a Teacher’s Assistant.
In Kindergarten 1 learning is centered around Language Arts, Mathematical concepts, Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Knowledge and Understanding of the World, Physical Education, Computer concepts, Drama and Music. At this level much of the curriculum is taught through art and educational manipulative toys and equipment, and is thematic in approach, integrating all of the above areas.
At the Kindergarten 2 level young students are further challenged with the introduction of Social Studies, Science, Library Studies and a more formal approach to Art.
Grades 1, 2 and 3 students continue to build on the concepts of the Kindergarten curriculum, introducing new areas of study in Spanish and Life Skills. Students have more structure in the day’s timetable, while developing more independent study skills. They sit at their individual desks and chairs. Swimming becomes a compulsory part of the curriculum starting in grade 1.
In Grades 4, 5 and 6, while building on the same subject areas in greater depth, students are encouraged to look at concepts within the context of a global village. Students’ critical thinking and analytical skills continue to be developed in all areas of study as the students are challenged in different ways.
Hillel offers the Ministry of Education’s Grade Six Achievement Test (GSAT) for those students who would like the option of going on to public high schools or for whom our High School is not a viable option. Hillel students who take the GSAT examinations achieve scores which put the results of the School among the top three schools in the island.
